Common Questions About Crowns and Bridges

How long do dental crowns and bridges last?

Most crowns and bridges last at least five to seven years, and many last 10 years or longer with good brushing and flossing and by avoiding very hard, gummy or sticky foods.

How much does a dental crown cost in San Antonio?

It depends on the tooth and the type of restoration you need. Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays first, then you get the estimated cost before any treatment starts.

Will insurance cover a crown or bridge?

Many dental insurance plans cover part of the cost, often about half. We work with your insurance to help you get the most from your benefits, and we offer CareCredit financing and a Membership Club for patients without insurance.

How many teeth can a bridge replace?

A bridge can replace one or more missing teeth in a row. It's held by crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap, or by dental implants so healthy teeth don't need to be changed.

Crown or filling: which do I need?

A filling repairs a small cavity. If too much of the tooth is damaged for a filling, an inlay or onlay (a partial crown) or a full crown protects what is left. Your dentist will show you what they see.

Why are dental bridges used?

A bridge fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth in a row, so you can chew and smile comfortably and your other teeth don't drift. It is held by crowns on the teeth on either side, or by dental implants.

What can I get instead of a bridge?

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth without filing down the healthy teeth next to it. Partial dentures are another option for several missing teeth. Your dentist shows you every option and cost first.

Is it painful to have a dental crown?

We numb the tooth first, so most patients feel little or no discomfort. Sedation is available if you're nervous. Some sensitivity afterward is common, and your dentist will explain what to expect.

Can you eat normally with a dental bridge?

Yes, most people eat normally with a bridge. Your dentist will tell you which foods to avoid at first, and brushing and flossing around it keeps it lasting longer.

Do teeth go bad under crowns?

A tooth under a crown can still get decay at the edge, so brushing, flossing and regular checkups matter. Your dentist checks your crowns with X-rays at your exams.

What is the downside of having a dental bridge?

A traditional bridge uses the teeth next to the gap as anchors, which means shaping those healthy teeth. An implant-supported bridge avoids that. Your dentist explains both so you can choose.

Can a crown go on a dental implant?

Yes. An implant with a crown replaces a single missing tooth, and two or more implants can hold a bridge for several missing teeth in a row.
