Get Out of Dental Pain Fast

Call the office nearest you and tell us it's an emergency. We see dental emergencies the same day, so you can get out of pain and back to your life.

What to Do Right Now

Pick what happened. These steps ease the pain and protect your tooth until you get to us.

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  2. Floss gently to remove any food stuck near the tooth.
  3. Hold a cold compress on your cheek.
  4. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs. Don't put aspirin on your gums.

Fever, or swelling that spreads to your eye or neck? Go to the ER.

  1. Save any pieces of the tooth.
  2. Rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water.
  3. Press gauze on any bleeding for 10 minutes.
  4. Use a cold compress to keep swelling down.
  1. Pick the tooth up by the top (the crown), not the root.
  2. Rinse it briefly with water. Don't scrub it.
  3. Gently put it back in its socket if you can, or keep it in a cup of milk.
  4. Call us right away. The sooner you're here, the better the chance to save it.
  1. Keep the crown and bring it with you.
  2. Cover the area with sugar-free gum or dental cement from the pharmacy.
  3. Chew on the other side until your visit.
  1. Rinse with warm salt water a few times a day.
  2. Hold a cold compress on your cheek.
  3. Don't put heat on the swelling.

Trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever? Go to the ER now.

  1. Rinse with cool water.
  2. Press clean gauze on the cut.
  3. Use a cold compress for swelling.

Bleeding that won't stop with pressure? Go to the ER.

Common Questions About Emergency Dental Care

Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment?

Yes. We see dental emergencies the same day. Call the office nearest you as early as you can and tell us it's an emergency, and our team will find you a time today.

What are your hours for dental emergencies?

Appointments are available between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., depending on the day and office. Leon Springs and Potranco are open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can ask our Pleasanton office about Saturday hours.

Should I go to the ER or an emergency dentist?

For most toothaches, broken teeth and lost fillings, an emergency dentist is the right choice. We can treat the cause of the problem. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or heavy bleeding, go to the emergency room right away.

Will emergency treatment hurt?

Your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic before treatment. If you feel anxious, ask about our sedation options. Our goal is to get you out of pain.

What qualifies as a dental emergency?

A toothache or throbbing pain, a chipped, cracked or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown, and swollen or bleeding gums all count. Call the office nearest you and tell us it's an emergency. We see dental emergencies the same day.

Is a broken filling a dental emergency?

It can be, especially if it hurts. Cover the area with sugar-free gum or dental cement from the pharmacy, chew on the other side and call us. We see dental emergencies the same day.

Will an emergency dentist pull a tooth?

If a tooth can't be saved, yes. We do extractions in our own offices, with sedation available. Whenever possible your dentist will look at saving the tooth first, for example with a root canal and crown.

What happens if I leave a rotten tooth too long?

An infected tooth can go quiet and still spread. Pain, swelling or a bump on the gum are signs it needs care soon. Fever or swelling that spreads to your eye or neck means go to the ER.

How do I sleep with a toothache?

Keep your head raised, hold a cold compress on your cheek and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs. Don't put aspirin on your gums. Then call us first thing; we see emergencies the same day.

Can a dentist fix a rotten or broken front tooth?

Often, yes. Depending on the damage, options include a filling, bonding, a crown or, if it can't be saved, an extraction and replacement. Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays, then explains your options and cost.
